Rocket lines up for Newcastle Thunder for first time this season

Cramlington Rockets U16, Philly Brantingham will make his first start of the season tonight.

Lining up at prop for the Newcastle Thunder Scholarship U16s, the ambitious side take on Wakefield Trinity at 7pm at Kingston Park Stadium.

Having impressed off the bench in the close match between Newcastle and Castleford Tigers last week, Brantingham is known for his hard hitting carries and smooth offloading game.

He lines up along six other Rockets, including Jack Allen who captains the side for the first time. Three more Rockets feature on the bench.

It is a team full of talent, with Brantingham, who has also featured for the Newcastle Falcons academy, joined at prop by Fergus Simpson, who has recently been announced as part of the Scotland U19s squad for the European Championship this summer.

Between them there is Mark Roberts, the hooker who was invited to attend the recent England Development Camp with his club mates Alex Donaghy and Nathan Clemmitt who featured for England Youth last year.

And on the bench, Ollie Robinson has been announced as part of the British American Football Association (BAFA) GB U17s Development squad.

Tonight’s match is the last of the Scholarship season that has seen some memorable matches since January, when the young Thunder men defeated Super League Academy, Widnes Vikings.

Since then, further victories have followed over Leeds Rhinos and London Broncos, with close losses against Castleford, Bradford Bulls and Warrington Wolves hinting at a bright future.

“We are really pleased with how the season has gone this year” said Thunder and Rockets coach, Jordan Robinson.

“We’ve got a great talent across the squad, and results are starting to reflect that. To have so many Rockets in the Thunder squad is a source of great pride and it will hopefully continue to carry over for the forthcoming season.”
