A number of Cramlington Rockets’ junior players have enjoyed international recognition, with five pulling on the Scotland jersey this summer.

Chris Paterson and Fergus Simpson travelled to Belgrade at the start of August as part of Scotland’s U19 squad for the European Championship. Victory over Ireland was followed by defeat in the semi-finals by France on the tour which included two days preparation in Budapest.

Simpson and Paterson were joined in the squad by fellow Newcastle Thunder Academy prospect, Callum Kennedy and Wallsend’s Adam Hay, showing the strong Scottish heritage in the North East.

Then back in July, three more Rockets played for Scotland U16s, taking on Wales in a match in Wigan.

Spike Birkett, Cameron Young and Matthew Ferguson all played that day with the Dragons taking the spoils.

“It’s brilliant to see so many Rockets earn international recognition” commented Rockets Chairman, Jeff Ball.

“The whole club is very proud of them and it’s an experience that will only aid their development in the coming years while inspiring those around them.

“This takes our international appearances to seven this summer, demonstrating both the talent within and the opportunities available to those at the club and in the North East.”
