Gilroy up for Coach of the Year

One of Rockets Community's coaches has been nominated for a prestigious Northumberland Award.

Danny Gilroy has been shortlisted for Coach of the Year at the Alnwick & District Sports Council Annual Awards.

Recognising the efforts of individuals and teams from across the area through 2017, the awards will take place on February 8th at Alnwick Playhouse.

It is a massive boost for Gilroy, who in recent years has become the face of rugby league in North Northumberland for many.

Working as part of Rockets Community, the community arm of RFL National Club of the Year, Cramlington Rockets, he has brought rugby league to every primary school in Alnwick in the last two years.

In 2017, he organised the first ever rugby league competition in Alnwick with 150 local children taking part, the furthest north the sport has ever been played.

"We are thrilled to hear Danny has been recognised and a fitting recognition of all his hard work" said Community Manger, Steve Beaty.

"The cub's name is inspired by Danny as his nickname is Bear and it is lovely to know that the Sports Council agrees with us."

Alnwick Bears is a new club launching in February 2018 that offers playing opportunities to U7-10s and a toddlers programme called Bear Cubs.

There is a FREE open day on 4th February, which can be booked by visiting www.bookwhen.com/alnwickbears. For more infomration, email info@alnwickbears.co.uk.
