Four of Cramlington Rockets’ juniors opened their Newcastle Thunder Academy accounts with a victory.

Ryan Hull, Seth Kippax-Jones, Tom Wilcox, Rhys Edgell and Oliver Gowing are all part of this season’s Newcastle Thunder U16s Academy having started their rugby league journey with Cramlington Rockets.

With a series of six matches lined up in the coming months, the first game of the campaign was a trip to Cumbria Storm.

Featuring all the Rockets bar the injured Edgell, the team ignored the wintry conditions to race into an early lead, a cross field kick from Wilcox proving crucial in the second of three tries in the first half to leave the score 14-0 in Newcastle’s favour at the break.

Despite Cumbria opening the scoring in the second period, it was more of the same for the rest of the match, with four more tries from the black and whites taking the final score to 32-4.

Thunder Academy Coach Graeme Neighbour said after the game: “I was very pleased how the forward pack dominated the game and they always gave us a good platform to be able to play a fast paced game. There are always improvements to work on and we have time to do this before our next game."

Rockets U15s Coach, Jeff Ball added: I know the lads were very excited for this game and it is great for them and the club to see them progress to the next level.

It sets an exciting example of what could be for our younger members while giving these lads a great experience and I am looking forward to seeing them run out at Kingston Park.”

The next academy fixture sees Thunder host Super League outfit Salford Red Devils on Sat 30th Jan with a 2pm K.O. at Kingston Park.
