Will Newcastle feature in 2021?

In October and November 2021, England will host the biggest ever Rugby League World Cup with the men’s, women’s and wheelchair tournaments running simultaneously.

Over the last 12 months, towns and cities have been bidding to win the right to play host to the prestigious tournament, and on Tuesday 29th January, the world will discover which bids have been successful.

Newcastle turned many heads with its ambitious bid to host the opening ceremony and opening match at St James' Park, as well as a Scotland match at Kingston Park and wheelchair rugby league at the newly opened Newcastle Eagles Arena.

"We believe Newcastle is becoming the world's favourite destination for rugby" said Rockets Chairman, Jeff Ball, also part of the Newcastle City bid team.

"You only have to look at the success of Magic Weekend, four of the five biggest attendances ever, as well as the various rugby union matches that have already taken place and the forthcoming ones like the European Finals in May.

It is a a great location with a lots to do but what really makes us stand out is the community work of the last few years. North East Rugby league is growing every year and if we are chosen to be involved, this is going to be a massive boost to the sport across the region."

The Rugby League World Cup 2021 host announcement will be broadcast at 9am (GMT) on BBC Sport Online.

Host Helen Skelton will be joined by RLWC2021 Ambassadors; Kevin Sinfield; St. Helens and England Women’s star, Jodie Cunningham; and Leeds Rhinos Wheelchair captain, James Simpson, to reveal the successful towns and cities.

Jon Dutton, RLWC2021 Chief Executive, commented:

“We have undertaken a thorough bid process, lasting twelve months and involving some very tough decisions. The quality of bids has been impressive across all three tournaments and we are now ready to share the venue details as we continue to build awareness and excitement.

I look forward to congratulating those that have been successful and working with those local communities over the next 1,000 days to stage an incredibly inclusive and welcoming tournament. We appreciate some people will be disappointed that their town / city hasn’t made the final list, but the tournament will be very accessible with marquee moments to look forward to."
