Super League opposition and more for the U16s and U19s

Fixtures have been announced for Newcastle Thunder’s Under 16s and Under 19s academy sides for the 2018 season.

Fixtures have now been announced for Newcastle Thunder’s Academy sides for the 2018 season.

The club’s under 16 side will play 7 fixtures in the New Year from February to April with Bradford Bulls, Castleford Tigers, Leeds Rhinos, London Broncos, Wakefield Trinity, Warrington Wolves and Widnes Vikings providing the opposition.

The Under 19s will again compete in the Super League Academy competition from February to September, a thirteen team competition that sees Thunder’s aspiring youngsters test themselves against the best talents within the academy system across the country.

Fixtures will, where possible, act as curtain raisers to Newcastle Thunder first team home matches, allowing supporters to see both the current and future stars of the team.

Heap said: “These fixtures are an important part of our young players’ development so to play some of them on the same day as Thunder’s League 1 games is a big deal and offers some additional challenges to the players – in the form of the increased crowds and atmosphere that surrounds the first team games. It is also a perfect opportunity for the Thunder Army to see how hardworking the Thunder players of the future are.

“As an academy, we aren’t as much concerned about score-lines and results as we are about performances. It is important that young players are trying the things that they are working on in training in competitive situations, where there are additional pressures, then reflecting on what went well for them and where they can improve. The real barometer of success for us is how much each player learns from their experience and how much they develop throughout the programme as a rugby league player and as a person.

“We have some really exciting players throughout the age groups this year and we’re all looking forward to seeing how they progress.”
