Three workshops, starting in February.

Newcastle Thunder will be running Coach Development Programme (CDP) again in 2018.

A key feature of Thunder’s approach to the England Talent Pathway programme, the programme’s aim is to enhance the great work which is being done throughout the region’s community clubs via a three-workshop series covering topics such as; technical & tactical coaching, mental skills, movement skills and Talent ID.

Michael Heap, Thunder’s Academy Manager and Assistant First Team Coach, is really pleased with the standard of coaching in the North East and is confident that this will continue to improve in 2018.

“Our previous Coach Development Programmes have received some really positive feedback from the coaches involved, who found the content appropriate and relevant to the age groups they are coaching. We are aiming to make the CDP relevant to all NERL coaches regardless of the age, gender or experience of the players they coach.”

“One of the most pleasing aspects of the CDP is that we have had coaches go on to work with players on both of our Under 12 and Under 14 Player Development Programmes.

This is something that we are keen to continue with a cohort of coaches who have joined the game since or wish to continue their development.

The CDP aims to provide opportunities for coaches to learn alongside our Academy and First Team staff in a comfortable and open environment.”

On an exciting new aspect of the CDP Heap said, “This year we are finishing the CDP with input from England Rugby League Academy staff. Dave Elliott (England Academy Manager) and Dave Rotheram (RFL Head of Coaching) will be hosting the session which is part of a massive day at the club featuring two academy games as well as a big first team games.

I’m sure their input will really add value to NERL coaches.”

Coaches who attend all three CDP workshops will receive a free match ticket to the Newcastle Thunder v York City Knights game on Sunday 8th April.

The CDP timetable is as follows:

Monday 5th February 2018 – 18:30-20:30 – Kingston Park

Monday 12th March 2018 – 18:30-20:30 – Kingston Park

Sunday 8th April 2018 – 12:30-14:30 – Kingston Park

Coaches are required to register for the CDP by emailing adam.houston@newcastle-thunder.co.uk.
