What A Weekend!

Trophy-lifting, table-topping, debut-making fun.

The fun never stopped for the Rockets last weekend, with three fun-filled days of activity.

Friday saw the U16s ‘A’ take on a very strong Jarrow Vikings side in the NE Cup Final, with two early tries giving the Rockets a lead that was never given up as they went on to win 30-18 in front of a big crowd at Kingston Park.

Alongside the return of the newly-expanded Rocket Tots on Saturday morning, the U12s were in action at Cramlington against East Cumbria Crusaders, a 52-6 win chalking up a sixth straight win for the growing age group.

Meanwhile, over the river the 1st Team travelled to Jarrow as they looked to make it a Rockets double over the Vikings. Despite losing at half time in an incredibly tight and fierce affair, the Rockets managed to pull away at the death to record a 26-18 win over last year’s Grand Finalists that led to massive celebrations at the full time whistle as they moved to the top of the North East Premier Division.

Having travelled with only fourteen players, it was a victory made all the more impressive given that twelve of the squad had come through the Rockets’ junior system and the average age of the squad was only twenty years old.

A number of the first team were then at Kingston Park on Sunday to watch the U8s make their playing debuts in a festival before the Newcastle Thunder match. Having only launched the team a few months ago, to have sixteen players available (with several missing) was a fantastic effort from the club’s newest age group.

With the U10s also in action and reaching the festival final at half time, the icing on the cake was seeing the U8s run out as mascots with the visiting Toulouse side, the first rugby league match many of them had ever attended – what a good way to start!

“This has been an amazing weekend and has reminded us why people fall in love with this club” said Chairman, Jeff Ball.

“We are all about people and our members and to see the hard work and time translate to results on the pitch is so exciting to see.”

“The U16s Cup Final was one of the best games of rugby league I have seen this year, while I have never seen the 1st Team so happy at a victory! It shows how much it meant to them all.”

“Then on Sunday, to see so many youngsters pull on the orange and black for the first time, it makes you excited to think of what the future holds for them when they are the older kids.”

Ball added: "The one consistent theme for the weekend has been the support of the Rockets Family. From start to finish, they have been fantastic both in numbers and noise and added to the atmosphere throughout. It really makes a difference to those on the pitch so a big thank you to them too."
