A Storming Start to the Season
By Paul Dunham
A strong team effort against Gateshead in the first game of the year.
Cramlington Rockets U12s opened their league campaign against their rivals from the other side of the river, Gateshead Storm.
An overcast morning couldn't dampen the spirits of the players, who were eagerly anticipating their first game.
The game began with both teams finding their feet after pre-season work finally came to fruition, before Jordan Webster burst through on the left side to score a fine individual try, with the conversion missed Rockets led 4-0.
The next try was the highlight of the game after working our way up the field for the three tackles, on the fourth Jordan Webster went from dummy half, passed to Matthew Webster who then passed to James Snowden. James then scored out wide in a fine free-flowing move. 8-0 to Rockets.
Storm replied just before the break to reduce the arrears to 8-4 at the interval.
The second half started with Rockets working their way down the pitch before Jordan Webster powered over under the posts and converted his own try to make it 14-4. Storm once again fought their way into the match to make it 14-8 to keep the game in the balance.
Jordan Webster wasn't finished yet as he powered in for another two tries to cap a fine individual display. The second of which was set-up after a quick scoot from dummy half by James Snowden who made around 20m down field to allow Jordan to score out wide to make the final score 22-8.
We also had four players on debut gaining their first taste of competitive rugby league, Jack Annison, Aidan Pearson-Hartley, Joseph Fearns and Marcus Collier; all of whom proved themselves to be great additions to the squad.
It was a good all round team performance with the Man of the Match Award being shared by Jordan Webster and James Snowden.
A firm base on which to start, and build on through, the season.
