Cramlington Rockets’ highest honour.

With Cramlington Rockets unlikely to be able to hold its annual end of season awards, the club has chosen to ensure at least one person is recognised for their efforts in 2020 and in recognition of the club's 20th anniversary.

Karen McCall has been selected to receive this year’s President award from Club President, Steve Beaty, the highest honour the club awards every year.

As well as being a proud U12s parent and Child Welfare Officer, it was Karen’s work when the club was not able to operate that left a lasting impression.

As lockdown was imposed and home-schooling became the norm, despite suffering from COVID-19-esque symptoms, she offered to support the club’s parents who had suddenly been thrown into the role of teacher.

Balancing being Acting Head at the school she also worked at as they cared for the children of Key Workers, every day she shared academic and creative suggestions, from the popular P.E. with Joe to hidden gems such as virtual visits to Chester Zoo.

Well received by parents across the club’s five different age groups, she also shared her daily ideas with the Rockets’ sister clubs, Alnwick Bears and Newcastle Magpies up until the summer break.

“Karen embodies all that is good about the Rockets Family and we are proud to have her as part of the club” said Beaty.

“Particularly through those early weeks, everyone was nervous and parents were under pressure and to have that daily interaction became really important to a lot of people.

There have been other cases of club members supporting each other albeit from a far throughout lockdown, which has meant a lot to see, but Karen’s efforts really shone out this year.”

Upon learning of winning the award, McCall said “I really wasn’t expecting this and I’m speechless. It has been such a strange time and it is great to see smile on the kids’ faces as they get back to training. I’m very grateful for the recognition.”

McCall will be presented with her award in the coming weeks.
