Former Rockets Coach takes on Super League Role

Steven Beaty

Earlier this month Super League Club Huddersfield Giants announced that former Rockets Coach, Steven Beaty will take over as head coach of its scholarship team. Steven, 24, attended George Stephenson High School in Killingworth and learnt his trade in a very successful coaching career here at Cramlington Rockets. It was through this success he became a Community Coach for the North East's only professional side, Gateshead Thunder, and worked to promote rugby league around North Tyneside and Northumberland.

After learning of the community role with Huddersfield Giants earlier this year, Steven made the move South and has been enjoying it ever since. After making a good impression with the scholarship team, he was quickly given the role of head coach.

When asked about his new role Steven was quick to acknowledge his roots: "I was very fortunate to work with some amazing people in the North East and feel very grateful that my home town club Cramlington Rockets supported my move to Huddersfield. It's a big step for me to develop as a coach at one of the top clubs in the country. The club played a big part in my development and I keep in touch with everyone at the Rockets. They are continuing to go from strength to strength and I wish them all the best for the future."

Cramlington Rockets currently have U8s, 10s, 12s, 14s, 15s, 16s and train and play every Saturday at the Sporting Club at Cramlington High School. All abilities and both boys and girls are welcome. For more information contact Jeff Ball on 07809 114 905

The club can also be found on Facebook and on Twitter @CrammieRockets.

U12 vs Peterlee Pumas

3rd Sept 2011

The U12 got out of bed in the morning expecting a training session as there were no match officials for this weekend. However, it appeared that Peterlee were not informed and thus were on their way to Cramlington. So the Coach rounded up as many players as possible in the short time given.

Rockets turned up with 10 players to Peterlee's 16 players.

The game started with 10-a-side.

The Rockets kicked off, Pumas received and drove deep into the Rockets half. Mistakes by the Rockets gave another set to the Pumas. Pumas managed to score from this and convert.

The next 10 minutes was dominated by the Rockets. They managed to score three tries in succession. The first came from Rhys who was on the wing and had an overlap. The second from Owen when from the kickoff drove down the wing. The third came from Joe who drove down the middle and cut through to score. Callum managed to convert two of the three.

Pumas managed to pull a try back just on the halftime whistle

Half Time - Rockets 16-10 Pumas

The Rockets received and drove deep into the Pumas half, Joe again cut through to score with Callum converting.

The Rockets received and pretty much did the same again, but this time a great move from Callum and Liam nearly got the Rockets another try but unfortunately was knocked on.

The Pumas regrouped and proceeded to break through the Rockets defences to score three tries in succession. This put the Pumas 4 points ahead.

The Rockets played well and managed to get the ball into the Pumas half. Callum and Liam moved the ball closer to the try line with Liam getting over the line to score near the touchline.

The scores were now level with 3 minutes to go.

Pumas kicked off with a long ball which found touch. This set the Pumas for a last minute drive. But Pumas to an opporuntiy to drop kick and score and addition point.

Rockets tried to regroup for another drive but a knocked on the last play.

FINAL Rockets 26 -27 Pumas

A fantastic game of rugby. All the player were great. It was an all round good performance. Well done to all.

U12 Semi Final

Rockets U12 Cup Semi Final

Rockets vs Wallsend Eagles

Saturday 18th June 2011

This was the first time the Rockets had meet the Eagles this season.

The game got to a poor start with the Rockets letting the Eagles run a try in from the halfway line.

Rockets 0-4 Eagles

From the kickoff the Eagles were piling on the pressure with several runs, stopped by some awesome tackles from Angus, however, it was not enough and Eagles scored in the corner for their second try.

Rockets 0-8 Eagles

The Rockets needed to get their heads up. A team talk from new coach, David, had them ready to go. The ball was kicked deep into the Eagles half and the Rockets were up quickly. A mistake by the Eagles gave a scrum to the Rockets, this gave the Rockets their first attack of the match. Shane ran the ball a good 10 yards, followed by Lewis, but the Eagles tackling was good. Another two run down the middle by Sam and Shane set the Rockets for a play with the backs, Joe took the set and ran for the line and passed out to Owen who scored on the overlap.

Rockets 4-8 Eagles

From the kick off, Owen received the ball and ran the length of the pitch only to be tackled on the 5 yard line. On the set this was passed to Shane who ran the try in. This was converted by Callum.

Rockets 10-8 Eagles

So within three minutes the tables had turned. However the Rockets weren’t finished there. From the kick off the Eagles put in a short kick, but this was received by Callum who ran through the Eagles to score under the posts. This was converted.

Rockets 16-8 Eagles

The Eagles were not giving up that easily. They piled on the pressure forcing a mistake on the third tackle. From the scrum the Eagles moved forward and on the fourth tackle managed to run in a try. This was converted.

Rockets 16-14 Eagles

The Rockets kicked off and defended well, getting Eagles to their fifth tackle, however a mistake by the Rockets gave the Eagles another set quite close to try line which they managed to score in the corner.

Rockets 16-18 Eagles

The Rockets had to get re-organised. A couple of substitution were made and from the kick off the Eagles were giving the Rockets a hard time, and then there was a break away run, but Kieran was quick enough to catch the Eagles player who knocked on in the tackle. This gave the Rockets the opportunity to get back into the game. However, a pass was deemed forward and the scrum went to the Eagles.

Great defence by the Rockets managed to get the Eagles into touch on the next set. From the scrum, Owen managed to get a great run up the wing only to be stopped at the 30 yard line. However, this set the Rockets up for a drive. On the third set the ball was passed down the line to Angus who was taken out by a blatant foul (tripped over by a kicking action from the Eagles player.) For some reason, no card was issued. However, it was a penalty to the Rockets. Another drive nearly had another try, but it wasn’t to be. The half time whistle was blown.

Half time - Rockets 16-18 Eagles

The Eagles kicked off and this was caught by Shane who drove through the Eagles to score under the posts.

Rockets 22-18 Eagles

From the kickoff, the Eagles forced an error winning a scrum. The Eagles were within a metre of the try line, but Callum intercepted a pass and managed to run to the half way line before getting tackled. The next sets appeared disorganised which ended with a knock-on by the Rockets. The Eagles took advantage and from the scrum made their way up to the try line resulting in a score.

Rockets 22-22 Eagles

From the Rockets kickoff the Eagles were held back to the halfway line where they kicked on their fifth tackle. This was driven back into the Eagles half by the Rockets, but some quick play caused a knock-on. The Rockets were defending again, but managed to keep the Eagles to their fifth tackle. This was collected by Joe who managed to offload the ball to Angus who ran the whole length of the pitch to score under the posts.

Rockets 26-22 Eagles

The Eagles kicked off and this was collected by Angus who ran just short of the halfway line before being tackled. The next set went wrong when the Eagles intercepted a pass. This allowed them to drive deep into the Rockets half which resulted in a try to the Eagles.

Rockets 26-26 Eagles

The Rockets kicked off getting the ball deep into the Eagles half. Then the Eagles managed to get around the Rocket defence. The Eagles ran to within 10 yards of the try line before being taken down by Angus. The Rockets managed to defend well so that the Eagles were on their fifth tackle they kicked it over the deadball line resulting in a set from the 20 yard line for the Rockets. The ball was passed to Kieran who stormed through the Eagles to give himself a clear run to the posts. This was converted.

Rockets 32-26 Eagles

From the Eagles kickoff, Nathan collected the ball and ran a good 20 yards before being grabbed, but unfortunately he was pushed into touch by two Eagles players. The Rockets were now defending with four minutes to go, but the Rockets defence kept the Eagles at bay with a another Eagles kick over the deadball line. Another set from the 20 yard line resulted in a tackle near the 40 yard line, however the Eagles were quick of the mark and smothered the Rockets player and pushed him into touch. Again the Rockets were defending but with two minutes to go. The defence held the Eagles back and on a poor pass Callum managed to kick it twice down field about 15 yards, but unfortunately when trying to collect it on the run knocked on. From the scrum the Eagles were attacking hard, unfortunately for the Rockets they spotted a gap in the line and managed to get through and score a try. The Eagles had to convert this to draw. It was a difficult kick and the Eagles prevailed. The whistle was blown for full time.

Rockets 32-32 Eagles

Match conclusion

A fantastic match for the U12, but unfortunately could not hold on to the lead. A slow start, but some good sets. The match was enjoyed by all. We look forward to the re-match to see who gets into the final.

Day o Rugby at Cramlington
May 28, 2011, 2:38 pm

Cramlington Rugby Day 28/05/2011

Saturday saw a bevy of rugby as the Rockets took over the Sporting Club at Cramlington for a variety of activities.

The main event was the U10 festival played on the main pitch with six of the regions teams coming together for a 15 game tournament. There was also an Introductory Day for local school children ran by Gateshead Thunder Community Coach, Lee Carbutt, and also the U12’s and U14’s training as normal.

The matches got underway with tries a plenty; the Rockets being slow to get going and struggling to find space against some solid defending. After a quick chat, the tries started to come, with scores coming from both out wide and through the middle.

Meanwhile the defence slowly started to improve with the organisation and positioning gradually improving to the point where they kept a clean sheet in one of the most intense games of the day. As the final whistle was blown, the skies began to open and so everyone dashed to the warmth of the Wheatsheaf for some well earned hot dogs!

“Yet again, we have had a good time so big thanks to all the teams and Jade and John from the RFL who organised it and were on hand all day” said U10 coach Jeff Ball.

“There was a definite improvement as the day went on as the players took it upon themselves to work on issues identified by Josh, our honorary Assistant Coach again, namely defensive positioning and communication – the fact we didn’t concede in one game is phenomenal for this level. We were also guilty of not using the space out wide early on which we also started to make use of so we as coaches are pretty happy.”

“The more the players can identify themselves and thus we don’t have to say, the more they learn and take ownership of what happens on the pitch. Especially with it being a home game, we wanted to give a good account of ourselves and I think we did just that.”

Player Reviews:

Liam – Much improved performance from last time, very enthusiastic, applied a lot of pressure in defence. Keep the effort up and build on today’s good work.

James B – Made use of his new found confidence when passing regularly to good effect, is able to add a running element to this, if he wants!

James W – Willing in defence as always, just need to keep his head up and stand straight going into the tackle and be lighter on his feet in defence and attack.

Dan – another good day at the coal face, worked hard for his try and started knocking people back in the tackle – we shall keep working on that and also introducing some more footwork.

Owen – Industrious as always, carried well, just needs to be aware of that touchline, when to take the tackle and to carry the ball in two hands. Got a try when volunteering for Pumas too.

Gavin – showed glimpses of his raw speed, was unlucky not to get a try due to a narrow pitch. Very pleasing awareness of positioning on the wing as the day went on and plenty of effort in defence. Needs to get the shoulder in first though when tackling – no shirt grabbing!

Ethan – great performance yet again. Very aware of where the try line is and regularly found opportunities and space. Needs to make sure he finishes the tackle and we would also like to see more of those big hits he is capable of!

Matty – Some excellent tries and started to look for his team mates more as the day went on. Needs to tackle the man in front of him, not let him pass and catch him up and also tell people more if there is space in front of him. DON’T BE AFRAID TO SHOUT!

Josh – Assistant Coach – Great encouragement from the sidelines and identified the key issues at the start of the day. Very encouraging for when the U9’s get started next year.
