Successful first run out of the year.

The Rockets 1st team enjoyed their first chance to stretch their legs this season, taking place in the Thunder 9s.

With Evan Simons taking the reins of a youthful squad, matches against Jarrow Vikings, Wallsend Eagles B and Catterick Crusaders beckoned.

Playing throughout the afternoon in the sunshine on the Kingston park pitch, the Rockets were able to progress through to the final.

The opponents for this match were Durham Demons, who had successfully overcome Wallsend Eagles A, Gateshead Storm and Peterlee Pumas in their own group.

With both sides tiring, the cover defence was impressive from the Rockets but last year’s champions, the Demons were able to edge the match and win 16-6.

“It was a good run out for the lads” said Simons. “There were some good performances and the defence was outstanding at times.

With the main season about to start, once we get into a routine of training and playing together, we should have a good year.”
