One of Cramlington Rockets’ brightest prospects has signed for Kingston Press Championship club, Keighley Cougars.

Lewis Davey, 19 will combine his studies at Leeds Trinity University with playing for the Cougars’ reserve grade.

Moving from Newcastle Thunder, it is the latest step in a fledgling career for Newcastle-born Davey who has also been selected for England Combined Regional Academy against the Australian Schoolboys and the North of England University Origin squad, amongst others representative honours.

Having started his career as an eight-year-old with the then named Killingworth Rockets, Davey progressed through the North East’s development pathway, earning a place on the North East’s Advance Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) programme that provided a springboard for his move to Thunder last year.

Davey was thrilled to make the move: “I am delighted to join such a high profile club as Keighley Cougars.

Keighley are in the heartland of rugby league with connections all over Yorkshire.

I am joining a quality squad of players and working with some very knowledgeable and experienced coaches that are already improving me as a player.

I am thoroughly enjoying my first season with the Cougars and hope to be at this great club for many more.”

Those at the Rockets who played a part in Davey’s were thrilled to see him continue his journey into professional rugby league: “Lewis is the epitome of what hard work can achieve” said Club President, Steve Beaty snr, who originally brought Davey to the club.

“As a club, we are all about giving people a good environment to enjoy their rugby league and realise their potential.

Given how long ago it was that Lewis started with us, for it very exciting for us to see one of our juniors continue his journey in the higher levels of rugby league and we wish him all the best for this season and beyond.”
