A leading local sport charity has given a grant to Cramlington Rockets.

Following a successful recent application, Sport Newcastle has awarded the club £720 to support Rockets Community, the rugby league club’s community-based arm.

Sport Newcastle was created from the former Newcastle upon Tyne Sports Council and offers funding and support to men, women and children seeking to realise their sporting dream.

Many people will know of the Annual Sport Newcastle Dinner, a who’s who of the North East’s leading sportspeople. Fab Flournoy, Alan Shearer and Jonny Wilkinson have all been previous winners of the Sports Personality of the Year award.

The grant will go towards the Field Games project, a new initiative to be launched by Rockets Community to increase participation in a number of different field sports for local school children.

Community manager, Steven Beaty was thrilled to receive the support: “This grant will make a big difference in helping us deliver another new project.”

“We are always looking to innovate and reach as many children as possible to encourage them to take up sports and have a healthy lifestyle.

Support from organisations like Sport Newcastle is invaluable and we are very grateful for the support.”

Mike Booth, Vice-Chair of Sport Newcastle said: “We are delighted to support Cramlington Rockets in their Field Games project.

They are a well-run club with a great ethos of working in the community. We wish them well in their aim to get even more young people involved in a wide variety of sports this summer.
