Cramlington Rockets’ Community Manager, Steve Beaty has been named as Scotland U16s Head Coach for the 2020 season.
The 32-year-old from Tyneside succeeds Jordan Robinson, stepping up from the role of assistant coach having impressed since joining the coaching team last year and guiding the squad to two victories in their four matches last season.
It’s the latest step for fast rising, Beaty, who is developing a reputation as one of the UK’s leading community coaches.
Integral to the development of Northumberland-based Cramlington Rockets, the RFL’s 2017 national club of the year, he has also worked with Newcastle Thunder U18s, and Super League side, Huddersfield Giants’ U16s.
Scotland Chairman, Keith Hogg said: "we are really pleased to have someone with Steve's experience and enthusiasm involved in our Under 16 programme.
It is a great challenge for any coach given that we have some players who have been involved in rugby league since they were 5 or 6 and others who are completely new to the sport.
Steve manages all this very well and brings a level of knowledge and passion for the sport that ensures that the squad are learning quickly and most importantly, they are having fun."
With the team set to take on Ireland home and away, England Lions, Mercia county side, and Wales B this season, there are plenty of opportunities for Beaty’s team to continue their progress.
Reflecting on his new role, Beaty said: “I thoroughly enjoyed being part of the success last year and look forward to the new challenges this one brings.
Some of the lads have stayed with us from last year but most of the squad is brand new.
We had a great first day training in February and it’s clear there is a lot of hard work taking place to develop rugby league in Scotland.”
