Callum Chick, centre, was one of three debutants from Newcastle.
One of Cramlington Rockets' former players took his place on the international stage yesterday (Sunday 4th July).
Marking the first time a Rocket has played at the highest international level in either code, Callum Chick started as part of the forward pack in England's win over the USA at Twickenham stadium in London.
Starting his rugby journey at Ponteland rugby union, Chick joined the Rockets as a 14 year old, playing both codes for several seasons.
His rugby career really started to gain traction in 2016 when, having also being named the Rockets' first team player of the season, he was soon given a spot as part of the Newcastle Falcons academy.
Making a steady ascent through to the first team, he ended the 2020/21 season as a mainstay of the side, his form impressing the England management enough to name him as one of 12 debutants in the first of two summer fixtures.
"We're incredibly pleased for Callum and his family" said Rockets Chairman, Jeff Ball.
"It's always great to see a local player make it to the big stage and when it is one that we have shared the journey with, it is even better.
I'm sure everyone at Ponteland RFC is incredibly proud today, playing such a big part of getting a rugby ball into Callum's hands when he was young and instilling a love of the game.
When he came to us aged 14 years old, he was already a very good player and really took to league, his ability being enough to merit a place in the men's side as soon as be turned 16 years old."
Ball continued "we have had a number of players represent their country, though today is the first time at the highest level. I don't think it's a coincidence that most of them have enjoyed a journey across rugby union and rugby league. I believe the mix of skills they learn can create a complete rugby player and we're always open to players playing both codes for that reason.
I'm sure today is the first step in another exciting journey for Callum and we send our congratulations to him, his family, friends, and coaches who have been there so far."
